Nominate a We Are Africa Icon

During an extraordinary decade of We Are Africa, the tribe has always placed a high value on building a passionate community that fosters a progressive and dynamic space where travel is truly a force for good.

Conscious about showing the power of humanity in good business, the tribe creates a meaningful bridge between tourism stakeholders and local communities e.g. Uthando; Ladles of Love; Amy Foundation; Masi Creative Hub and many more over the years, thanks to the incredible support from the tribe.

Meet We Are Africa’s Icons – organisations that have made significant positive impact to local communities across the continent. From educational programmes, food security initiatives to vital conservation projects, We Are Africa is proud to support these icons of transformation — testaments to Africa’s evolution as a leading marketplace and luxury travel destination.

  • Space for Giants: An ambitious conservation and wildlife justice project working across Africa’s iconic ecosystems. Protecting the biodiversity and mega-fauna of savannahs, rainforests, deserts and wetlands will serve to unlock nature’s value. Through sustainable management, developing a nature-based economy can serve communities whilst ensuring wildlife and people co-exist in shared wild spaces.
  • !Khwa ttu: Established in 2006, !Khwa ttu, preserves the ancient culture of one of the first people — The San. Some of the last surviving hunter-gatherers left on Earth, this education and culture centre supports the San through tourism opportunities. San guides lead unique tours through the Cape Floral Kingdom for visitors, fulfilling !Khwa ttu’s mission to enable San to reclaim and share their heritage, in their own way. !Khwa ttu, the San tell this story, in their own words.
  • Robben Island Museum: A World Heritage Site of incredible significance to the people of South Africa, Robben Island is most notably recognised as the prison that housed global African icon, Nelson Mandela. “To preserve and promote Robben Island as an inspirational national treasure and World Heritage Site that symbolises the triumph of the human spirit over extreme adversity and injustice.”
  • Table Mountain National Park: One of the world’s most recognisable Natural Wonders, Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) spans 70km from Signal Hill and Table Mountain in the north to Cape Point in the south and includes a Marine Protected Area and many of the beaches around the Peninsula. A major tourist attraction that is a must see for any traveller to Cape Town.
  • SAN Parks: SANParks manages a system of parks which represents the indigenous fauna, flora, landscapes and associated cultural heritage of South Africa. SANParks has the mandate to create destinations for nature-based tourism in a manner that protects the environment. The conservation mandate is heavily reliant on thriving and sustainable tourism operations.
  • South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI): With some of the richest biodiversity on the globe, South Africa’s landscapes, marine areas, wildlife and eco-systems support water purification, grazing, eco-tourism, fisheries, energy, food, healthy soils, and more.
